Whitworth Leisure Centre has long been a cornerstone of community life in Whitworth. Established in 1973, the centre quickly became a hub of activity, offering a wide range of sports & leisure activities that brought the community together.
The journey of Whitworth Leisure Centre is a story of community action and perseverance. After its initial closure due to funding challenges, the people of Whitworth rallied together under the banner of CLAW (Community Leisure Association Whitworth).
Through tireless fundraising efforts and securing crucial grants, this grassroots charity successfully reopened the centre in 2003, breathing new life into the facility.
For nearly two decades, the facility thrived with the support of small grants from Rossendale Borough Council. However, recent challenges led to RBC once again taking control of Whitworth Leisure Centre before unfortunately announced its closure in July 2023.
A dedicated group of residents formed the Whitworth Leisure Centre CIC (Community Interest Company), fuelled by a desire to see the centre flourish once again. Through tireless negotiations and unwavering community support, the CIC convinced Rossendale Borough Council to transfer ownership to Whitworth Town Council, with the CIC taking over operation through a lease agreement.
Today, Whitworth Leisure Centre stands as a symbol of what a community can achieve together. As we embark on this new chapter, we are committed to not only restoring the centre to its former glory but also to expanding its offerings to better serve the needs of Whitworth and its residents. We envision a future where the centre continues to be a vibrant hub for health, wellness and community connection.
